Not everyone’s life started out perfectly. Prior to their big break, some people struggled significantly. Of course, that battle leads to a greater appreciation for life and a host of other benefits.

Before her big break, Nomcebo Zikode, a musician from South Africa, saw a lot. She was formerly an unidentified, melancholy figure, or as Christopher Okigbo would put it, “a poplar thirsting for sunlight.” She then had the wisdom to press on nonetheless.

As a result, she became a huge musical success and a voice that many younger people find inspiring. She expressed that she had learned not to give up on life as she thought back on her path thus far. Maybe she should know. She did, after all, climb the ladder from the bottom to the top, where she is now.

She would not be one of the voices behind “Jerusalema,” certainly one of the biggest songs in South Africa to date, if she had given up along the way. She has also won a Grammy award, a distinction she attained through her combined effort with Zakes Bantwini and two other musicians.

Well, it bears repeating that Nomcebo has learned not to give up in life.
